One of the big questions that a blogging business will face is “How often should we post to the blog?”
The short answer is, ËœAs often as you can’.
The big caveat is that you shouldn’t try to force your company to maintain a posting schedule that’s unrealistic for your team. If you think you can post 3 times a week, start out with 2 posts a week, and try to build up to 3 posts a week. That will be easier to do than to try to crank out 3 posts a week, when you can only publish 2 posts a week.
Posting more often to your company blog has real advantages. First, it will increase traffic because more content attracts more traffic. Second, it will increase search traffic, because more posts means your company is creating more content that is being indexed by search engines. And finally, more traffic means more exposure for your blog, and by extension, your company.
So what are some tips for writing more blog posts? First, thing about how you will distribute the workload of your blogging team. At the start, you could divide the workflow evenly, if you have 3 bloggers and want to write three posts a week, have each blogger be responsible for a post a week. To simplify the process further, you could have each blogger be responsible for a particular type of post. For example, Sarah, Jan and Steven could be your three bloggers. Sarah posts every Monday with the latest industry news. On Wednesday, Jan posts information or announcements about the company and its products. On Friday, Steven could post an answer to a customer-submitted question.
Using this system, each blogger is responsible for one post a week, but they all know ahead of time what their post will be about, so they can be collecting information throughout the week to help in writing their post. Sarah can be reading industry sites and blogs from Tuesday through Friday and collecting relevant articles and posts that she can share on Monday. Jan can be collecting information and announcements from internal company sources from Thursday through Tuesday for his post on Wednesday. And Steven can be collecting emails throughout the week and talking to customer service to find questions from customers that can be addressed on Friday.
So what days should you post on, and what time of the day?
Every blog has a slightly different readership. For your blog, you need to consider who you are writing for, and when they will be reading your blog. In general, most blogs have the highest readership during the middle of the week (Tuesday through Thursday), and during the middle of the day, from say 10 am through 2 pm. You can track your blog’s traffic statistics to help you understand what days and times you have the most traffic.
My advice is to try posting on different days and times to see what gives you the best results. For example, a Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule might work best for your blog, or maybe a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday schedule is better. Or if you could only post twice a week, try Tuesday and Thursday and see what happens. But what you want to do is experiment to find the best schedule for your readers, then stick to it. You want to establish your posting schedule, then stick to it so that your readers know when to expect a new post. You want to post the same days every week so your readers know when to expect your new post.
