Consumer Trends That Will Impact Social Media Marketing In 2013More and more consumers are turning to the Internet to research brands, engage in conversations, and learn from peers about their experiences. In order for businesses to most effectively reach their target audiences online, they need to understand how their customers are using the Internet to be able to create a successful digital marketing plan. Outlined below are some need-to-know consumer trends that will impact social media marketing in 2013:

  • Approximately 58 million Americans turn to social media on a daily basis, and many of these users visit social media sites several times a day. According to a study shared by Social Media Examiner, “89 percent do it to keep in touch with friends and family, 67 percent for entertainment, 66 percent to learn about products and services, and 48 percent for career networking.” The big take away from these astonishing statistics is that businesses need to be actively engaging their customers using their social media pages throughout the day. Posting a question on your Facebook page to get an online conversation started among your fans or sharing industry news that your customer base would find valuable and “share-worthy” are keys to a successful social media marketing strategy.
  • Twitter is becoming an even more powerful tool for customer engagement. First of all, even if people are not active on Twitter, they generally hear about “tweets” on a regular basis thanks to traditional media (news and reality TV). Not only will Twitter continue to attract new users in 2013, but users (both new and existing) are turning to this popular social media site with the intention of actively participating in online conversations. Make it easy for people to follow your business on Twitter, and tweet information that your followers will find meaningful rather than just promoting your business.
  • The trend to follow brands on social media sites will continue to increase in 2013, and the reason behind this is that consumers are hoping to get discounts and special offers by being a fan of the brand. Social media campaigns are an effective way to attract new fans, gain new customers, and expand your brand on the Internet.

How will your business take advantage of these social media marketing trends in 2013?
